Dimitrios Andronis (1866-1918)

Another great character of Music Corfu that FEM honors on the Easter days is Dimitrios Andronis. The great "Olympic Poem" and aso the other funeral marsches, grate the extend of his composititive ability and of his musical knowledge. Although Andronis study in Italy, his was influenced a lot by tha classic music of his years and he wanted to extend it with his coming at Corfu.
He was not a strong character and he was not born also for be a public person. This was rhe reason that justify the fact that he remain an unknown man during his life. He also was judged and there was bad critisism around him, due to his less publicity. During his youth he become a member of Napolitanean Conservate, where he study on piano and on composing of music, and he took his diploma with honors. He continued his studies at Bologna, where he made his first apperance as a pianist, and due to his performance he was recognized as a grate talent. Since then Andronis used to share his time between Napoli and Bologna as a professor o piano and of composing, but on 1890 he come back to Corfu, takind the lead of the schools of the Philarmonic Society of Corfu. In a shortly period of time he resigned, as many other people make him to draw back, as he was a very gently character and he was not able to manipulate the critisism. It should be mentioned that despite the fact that there was a great success on the concert of philarmonic society of Corfu on 1907 that he conduct, he failed to pass the mean of the new classic music that sonce then was unknown to the island. Due to these Andronis become a cman of a retiring desposition and he did not express his fillings to noone. He used to pass his time sitting and thinking closely at a squere.

Before the first world war, Andronis, who had already tought enough Corfiots, desappear. Tehre was the opinion that he was migrate at Ventimilia of Italy, and other support the idea that he was a victim of murder at Fragkavila, where he died. Whatever had happened Andronis remain alive at the music sheets of Corfiot tradition.
Andronis was an excelent musician and a special lonely character with a lonely life. The melody that is performed by FEM since many years, describe the vividly the sence of loneliness. The Andronis' funeral marsch (or in latin, Androni Marcia Funebre) is connected since many years with FEM and with the procession of Holy Saturday.

"Spring morning on a Corfiot Squere. Into the silence, green is everywhere and the birds sing their song. Down of the trees' shadows the grandmothers discuss and nearby them, boys and girls play and laugh.
On a deck there is one linely man, thin, with gold plated eye grasses, in a dark suit. In his hands he hold his walking stick with the silver handle. He seems tired and close into hiself. From tme to time he waves his hand as if he conduct an orchestra, a band, whatever. Hours the same scene take place.....
The musician who is scuttled into the myusic inspiration. Andronis who travel in oceans of harmony, and skies of melodies...."
