Spyros Kontos (oboe)

Born at Corfu in 1974, began learning music at young age. He studied oboe with Yannis Papagiannis at the "Nakas" Conservatory in Athens and graduated with the highest degree and distinction. Afterwards, he was awarded a scholarship from the Greek government and went to study with Thomas Indermuhle at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Karlsruhe and later with Maurice Bourgue, at the Geneva Conservatory. In 1997 he was appointed solo oboist of the Athens Radio Symphony Orchestra, place he still holds. He has performed with many orchestras in Greece, Germany, France and Switzerland under the baton of sir N. Marriner, B. Kujiken, J. ter Linden, M. Karides and others.

As soloist and chamber musician he appears regularly in many venues and collaborates with universities, festivals and organizations. As a member of the Greek Contemporary Ensemble, he has performed the world premier of many works, while significant Greek composers have written works for him. He has recorded for many Radio and Television channels and in 2003 he did the world premier recording of the Oboe Concerto by Dimitris Dragatakis (Cultural Olympiad - Universal Music). Since 2002, Spyros Kontos is responsible for the oboe class at the Music Department of the Ionian University and at the "Hellenic Conservatory" in Athens.
